Why Are Different Technology and Equipment Used for a Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy technology and equipment include branded tools, such as TruClear, that your doctor may use during a hysteroscopy to see inside your uterus, conduct a sample tissue and remove growths and other uterine concerns. The right tool depends on a variety of factors, such as:

  • Your symptoms
  • Ultrasound findings
  • Comfort accommodations
  • Treatment goals

The heavy abnormal uterine bleeding that’s related to suspected polyps, retained tissue or fibroid symptoms don’t all need the same approach. At Hysteroscopy Center of New York, Felix Cohen, MD, FACOG uses the most appropriate hysteroscopy equipment for a safe, clear way to evaluate the interior of your uterus.

Some procedures only call for a small diagnostic scope, such as during an office hysteroscopy, while others require operative instruments, tissue removal technology or a different kind of anesthesia and pain management plan. “The right tool is the one that matches the finding, the setting and your comfort,” says Dr. Cohen.

What Are Some Types of Hysteroscopy Technology and Equipment?

Hysteroscopy equipment used for some procedures may include viewing tools, sterile fluid and tissue removal systems, such as Aveta, and treatment devices, such as NovaSure. Each tool has a different purpose, so the equipment depends on whether the procedure is for diagnosis, tissue removal or another treatment.

The tool choice also matters when considering a hysteroscopy vs. an ultrasound because an ultrasound tackles a concern outside your uterus, while hysteroscopy technology provides a direct view inside your uterine cavity. Common hysteroscopy technology and equipment include:

  • A thin hysteroscopy camera that lets your gynecologist see inside your uterus
  • A light source that allows visibility inside the uterine cavity
  • Sterile saline that gently opens the cavity for a clearer view
  • Small instruments that support biopsy or tissue removal
  • Treatment devices for certain bleeding or fibroid symptoms

That direct view helps guide your doctor to decide whether the next step is a biopsy, tissue removal endometrial ablation, or a different treatment plan. Equipment choice also affects your comfort. If you need stronger pain control or Dr. Cohen needs different equipment, he adjusts the care plan for your ultimate comfort and safety.

How Do Diagnostic and Tissue Removal Tools Differ?

Diagnostic hysteroscopy tools, such as EndoSee and the LiNA OperaScope, are perfect when the main goal is to simply see the uterine cavity clearly. These slim camera systems are useful after abnormal uterine ultrasound results, ongoing bleeding, fertility planning or an IUD concern. The view helps Dr. Cohen decide whether observation, biopsy, tissue removal or another procedure belongs in your treatment plan.

Tissue removal systems, such as TruClear and Aveta, serve a different purpose. Dr. Cohen may suggest one of these when a finding, such as endometrial polyps, retained tissue, biopsy target or small cavity fibroid needs removal while viewing your uterine cavity.

Your NYC doctor also takes into account the size, position, attachment, bleeding pattern and comfort needs before recommending a specific tool or treatment. The main differences in hysteroscopy technology and equipment include:

  • Diagnostic hysteroscopy tools focus on seeing your uterine cavity clearly.
  • Tissue removal systems extract small findings while your gynecologist is viewing your cavity in a see-and-treat approach.
  • Smaller cavity findings may be treated differently from deeper fibroids.
  • Larger fibroids or deeper findings may require a hysteroscopic myomectomy in another setting.
  • Stronger pain control, a longer treatment time or different equipment may also require a different care setting than an in-office hysteroscopy.

Does Ablation Technology Treat Bleeding or Fibroids?

Your gynecologist may discuss NovaSure and Cerene when heavy bleeding appears to come from the uterine lining and you don’t expect to have any more children. NovaSure ablation uses radiofrequency energy, while Cerene uses cooling technology to treat the lining. These options don’t treat every cause of bleeding, so a top-rated doctor first must find and evaluate polyps, retained tissue, fibroids, hormones and other abnormalities.

Sonata is different because it treats certain fibroids through the cervix using ultrasound guidance and radiofrequency energy. It’s not the same as NovaSure or Cerene because the target is fibroid tissue, not the entire uterine lining.

“Diagnosis and evaluation are just as important as treatment of your symptoms,” says Dr. Cohen. “The findings help me determine whether bleeding points to the lining, a cavity finding, a fibroid or another concern before I recommend any device.”
